The pet care industry ranges from veterinary pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, product and service distributors, food manufacturers and supplies of all kinds. According to a report by ProShares, the industry is expected to reach $350 billion by 2027.
Undoubtedly, interest has intensified and the pet care industry is capturing the attention of investors.
Some companies to invest in are as follows:
1. ProShares Pet Care ETF
This is an exchange-traded fund launched and managed by ProShare Advisors LLC, which invests in stocks of companies operating in the pet care retail sectors, from toys, suppliers, health care equipment and services, veterinarians and hospitals, to pet care services. The fund tracks the performance of the FactSet Pet Care Index, using the full replication technique.
2. IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.
A U.S. company engaged in the development, manufacture and distribution of products and services for companion animal, veterinary, livestock and poultry, water testing and dairy products. The company provides products to customers in more than 175 countries worldwide and employs approximately 9,200 people. In addition, it also manufactures and sells SNAP tests for pets, which have a variety of animal health diagnostic uses.
3. Zoetis – Zoetis Inc.
Is the world’s largest producer of medicines and vaccines for pets and livestock. The company was a subsidiary of Pfizer, but with the breakup of its 83% stake in the firm, it is now fully independent and markets its products in approximately 45 countries. Operations outside the United States account for half of total revenues.
4. Freshpet Inc.
Is a U.S.-based pet food company. Its cat and dog food products are marketed fresh and must be kept refrigerated. It is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the symbol FRPT.
In 2020, the Texas Enterprise Fund offered it a $2.1 million grant to build a plant in Ennis, Texas. That same year the company reported revenues of nearly $319 million, an increase of about 30 percent.
5. Chewy, Inc.
An onlie retailer of pet food and other pet-related products, based in Dania Beach, Florida. In 2017, PetSmart acquired Chewy for $3.35 billion, and represented the largest acquisition of an e-commerce business at the time. The company completed its initial public offering in 2019, raising $1 billion.
6. Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC.
The England-based company is engaged in the development and commercialization of veterinary products and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, forming part of the FTSE 100 index.
The Company sells pharmaceutical products primarily for dogs, cats, equine and food producing animals; products include drugs for Cushing’s disease in dogs and for hyperthyroidism in cats.
7. Pets At Home Group Plc
A British pet supplies retailer that sells products including food, toys, bedding, bedding, medicines and accessories. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is part of the FTSE 250 index.
Pets at home operates 453 stores, 316 grooming salons, 453 veterinary surgeries and 47 group-run veterinary practices.
8. Trupanion
A pet insurance provider based in Seattle, Washington, that offers and administers insurance in the United States, Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico. Trupanion is self-funded by American Pet Insurance Company (APIC).
Trupanion was the first pet insurance company to receive the AAHA Seal of Acceptance in 2008.
9. Covetrus, Inc.
The U.S.-based company offers animal care products and related services. In 2021, the company ranked 593rd on the Fortune 1,000 list of the largest U.S. corporations by total revenues.
Covetrus is engaged in the sale of consumable goods to wholesale and retail customers. Its products include supply chain services, software and recipe management.
10. Central Garden & Pet Company
A leading manufacturer and distributor of about 70 brands of lawn and garden and pet supplies. However, the name could be reversed, as the pet side accounts for about 60% of revenue for the business.
11. Heska Corporation
The company provides a range of complete blood diagnostic solutions. Treatments and tests include immunotherapy and complete allergy solutions. The digital imaging line features the latest high-definition digital radiography and digital ultrasound technologies, along with cloud-based data archiving, management and sharing services.
12. Zooplus AG
Is an online retailer of pet food and supplies based in Munich, Germany. Founded in 1999, the e-commerce company ships to 30 countries in Europe and the United Kingdom. Following its IPO in 2008, Zooplus is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and is part of the SDAX stock index.
